An international challenge

Back in 1987, the Bangabandhu Military Museum opened in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to showcase the history, developments and achievements of the nation’s Army, Navy and Air Force. Fast forward 30 years, and the museum has been transformed to educate and inspire future generations. As part of the modernisation, the military sought unforgettable immersive experiences to highlight Bangladesh’s unique landscapes and landmarks.

The challenge

This was one of our most ambitious VR projects to date. The aim was to design multiple large-scale simulators that blended 360° filmed content with motion, CGI and 4D effects to deliver lifelike experiences. But the project presented enormous challenges. We were coordinating with stakeholders across time zones, working within strict filming permissions and navigating complex shipping and export legislation. Then the pandemic struck, halting international travel. Despite these hurdles, a fixed deadline meant the project had to be delivered on time and at scale – requiring creativity, agility and close collaboration to succeed.

The process

Once restrictions eased, our crew travelled to Bangladesh to capture aerial and on-the-ground 360° footage at key locations, from the Chittagong Hill Tracts to the N8 expressway. Granted special permission, we filmed by drone, Jeep and even military helicopter, often in extreme weather conditions. Back at the studio, we modelled paragliders, Jeeps and BMWs in CGI, synchronising them with custom-built motion simulators and 4D elements such as wind effects. Experiences were structured to be highly realistic yet intuitive, with multiple rigs commissioned and synchronised via tablet control to allow groups of visitors to participate simultaneously.

Logistics & Collaboration

Delivering this project required extraordinary teamwork. Simulators and headsets were shipped to Dhaka while development was still underway, tested on a single UK prototype before final assembly. With Covid still impacting travel, our reduced installation crew worked tirelessly alongside the museum team to install, calibrate and train staff on-site. Despite the demanding schedule, every detail was delivered in time for the museum’s official reopening – proof of our ability to adapt, problem-solve and collaborate under pressure. The result was not just a technical achievement, but a shared triumph between our team, the client and the museum.

The outcome

The Bangabandhu Military Museum reopened in January with the VR simulators as star attractions, officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Three paragliders, four Jeeps and four BMW simulators now transport visitors into thrilling journeys across Bangladesh’s landscapes and infrastructure. The installations received overwhelmingly positive feedback, captivating audiences and positioning the museum as a global benchmark for immersive exhibitions.

This project demonstrates the unique power of VR to tell national stories, celebrate heritage and create unforgettable visitor experiences – proving how immersive technology can transform a museum into a destination where education, innovation and emotion collide.
