Bringing professional insight to students through 360º film

Norwich University of the Arts (NUA) wanted to give students hands-on exposure to the realities of creative industries. With work placements not always accessible, we partnered with them to design two interactive 360º films. These virtual experiences allowed students to step into professional roles, test their skills and learn through decision-making – all without leaving the classroom.

The challenge

Norwich University of the Arts offers courses across fashion communications, game design, film and more. But securing work experience placements for every student is not always possible, leaving some graduates without first-hand insight into industry life. The university needed an alternative way to help students develop employability skills and understand the challenges of professional environments. The solution had to be engaging, authentic and accessible to a broad range of learners, while also aligning with the Guardian award-winning Profile Careers project. That’s where we came in – to create a platform that would bridge the gap between academia and the world of work.

The process

We produced two interactive 360º narrative films: one capturing the energy of a fashion shoot, the other set in a creative studio. Students took on the role of an intern, making choices and completing tasks that shaped the day’s events. To keep the experience realistic, we built in the kinds of tensions that arise in real workplaces – from tricky client feedback to team disagreements. Each storyline was mapped to Norwich University of the Art’s profiled workplace skills framework, encouraging reflection and group discussion afterwards. This approach helped students connect classroom learning with real-world demands in an engaging and memorable way.

The outcome

The virtual films gave students a taste of professional life they might otherwise miss. By stepping into a workplace scenario, they gained a deeper understanding of decision-making, collaboration and adaptability. The experiences were authentic enough to spark lively discussion and reflection, yet safe enough for students to make mistakes and learn. Feedback from staff and learners was overwhelmingly positive, with the films praised as both engaging and effective in preparing students for the world of work. As an extension of the award-winning Profile Careers project, the films demonstrated the power of immersive media in higher education.

“The organisation and attention to detail from Infinite Form was fabulous. It was a complex pre-production phase but we’re very happy with the end result – you can take a student into an experience in a very visceral, very realistic way that it’s hard to do otherwise.”
