Sharing the urgent need for change

We partnered with Reloop – a non-profit organisation advocating for a circular economy – to create an augmented reality app raising awareness of deposit return schemes (DRS) for bottles and cans. Designed as a portable and impactful tool, the app educates audiences on the benefits of DRS, highlighting how small changes can deliver major improvements for people, animals and the environment.

The challenge

Reloop wanted to show the urgent need for deposit return schemes in the UK, contrasting the country’s current approach with international success stories. The challenge was to create an experience that would resonate emotionally and intellectually – showing how littering harms everyday lives, pets, livestock and communities.

Beyond raising awareness, the tool also needed to be engaging and accessible, suitable for use at events, conferences and even within parliamentary discussions. Reloop came to us seeking a solution that was interactive, educational and easily deployable – one that could demonstrate the transformative potential of a DRS and inspire action.

The process

We designed a bespoke AR app for tablets that presented a typical UK street scene in striking 3D. Initially drab and littered, the environment came alive as users tapped interactive hotspots, revealing facts and global DRS success stories.

With every interaction, the scene visibly improved – rubbish vanished, colours brightened, and negative imagery gave way to positive change. The progression culminated in a clean, vibrant street, reflecting the proven impact of DRS. Throughout, we worked closely with Reloop, ensuring accuracy, creativity and impact.

The outcome

The app was delivered with strong visual storytelling and immediate usability. Reloop quickly integrated it into high-level conversations, including discussions at Parliament House, where it helped communicate the urgency of introducing a UK DRS. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, both on the engaging narrative and the clear, memorable demonstration of the scheme’s benefits. Beyond its initial rollout, the app also created lasting value – with Reloop reusing assets such as the animated logo in wider campaigns. Plans are in place to extend its reach further by making the experience available through the app store for public access.
