Raising the bar for virtual events
Client X, a global technology disruptor whose reach extends to 70% of the world’s population, faced a major challenge during the pandemic: how to deliver their most important annual internal event virtually. Working closely with their team, we designed and built a bespoke platform from the ground up to replicate the energy, engagement and networking of an in-person experience.
The challenge
Every year, Client X hosts a global sales kick-off event – the biggest date in their company calendar. It brings together c-suite executives, vice presidents and commercial leaders from around the world. When COVID struck, the event had to pivot online. Their first attempt in 2020 fell short of expectations, lacking the energy of the in-person conference. For 2021, Client X needed something far more ambitious: a tailored, secure and engaging virtual platform that could recreate the buzz of their flagship event, scale across global time zones and deliver a consistent experience for thousands of attendees.

The process
We collaborated closely with Client X’s internal events and design teams to shape a platform built entirely from scratch. The experience combined professional branding with user-focused features, including a main stage for keynotes, attendee directories, breakout rooms, instant chat, coffee roulette networking and gamified engagement tools. To maintain energy between sessions, we integrated an arcade-style game, while a points-based system and live leaderboard encouraged interaction across the platform. Designed to be licensable and future-proof, the platform balanced entertainment, functionality and security, ensuring it was both dynamic and reliable for a high-profile, business-critical event.

The outcome
The three-day event ran seamlessly across multiple time zones, with professional keynote broadcasts, regional hosts and interactive sessions. Attendees engaged in live chats, idea exchanges and personalised agendas, while on-demand access extended the event’s reach. The results spoke for themselves: 94% turnout (up 5% year-on-year), 91% rating the platform as ‘Excellent’, and a 30% uplift in Net Promoter Score. Active engagement rose to 720 users, while sentiment analysis recorded 77% positive comments – the highest internal score on record. Client X hailed the virtual sales kick-off as their most successful online event to date.
