Creating an immersive app for our community
A good app can transform the visitor experience. With everything you need to know about a destination in the palm of your hand, you can plan and enjoy a trip and your activities effortlessly. But with the rise in popularity of AR trails and mobile-based entertainment to enhance destinations, many pre-existing visitor apps are being left behind.
The challenge
In order to offer dynamic entertainment, such as virtual treasure hunts or augmented reality enhancements that bring static exhibits to life, destinations are having to rely on separate apps, breaking the ease and flow of the user experience. So we set out to solve that challenge – creating an all-in-one visitor app for destinations, attractions, and organisations that combines essential visit planning functionality with cutting-edge, immersive technology and entertainment options.
But, in doing so, we knew we wanted to create more than a platform; we wanted to create a fully-formed experience that serves as a tool for giving back to our local community – and thus Unlock Norwich was born.
The process
Unlock Norwich aims to reimagine how visitors and locals experience the city’s rich history and landmarks, making its stories more accessible and engaging. To bring this vision to life, we leveraged our extensive experience creating immersive mobile apps to design and develop our own modular app platform – Infinite Destinations – through which Unlock Norwich was built.
The app simplifies navigation with an interactive map featuring facilities, independent cafés, restaurants, and green spaces, while a dedicated news and events section highlights upcoming activities. With augmented reality integrated as standard, Unlock Norwich brings the city’s stories vividly to life through curated, interactive experiences.
The outcome
Unlock Norwich launched in December 2024 on the App Store and Google Play, giving both locals and visitors a free companion to the city. From families on a day out to history enthusiasts exploring from home, the app caters to diverse audiences, providing accessibility and inclusivity at its core.
More than just a visitor guide, the app has become a platform for celebrating local culture and community. And because it’s built on the flexible Infinite Destinations framework, it can grow continuously with new points of interest, seasonal updates and practical local information – ensuring Unlock Norwich remains a dynamic, evolving experience that keeps the city’s stories alive. We can’t wait to see how it develops.
