Immersive technology is versatile and varied, offering a whole range of practical uses that make our lives easier, from virtual events to AR apps. In our ‘Quick guide’ blog series, we take a look at some of the services we offer here at Infinite Form to help you understand the types of experiences available – and how they benefit you. Here we look at app development. Many of our creative technology solutions rely on apps – whether it’s an app to trigger augmented reality, or to house a mobile game – which is why we offer comprehensive app development as well as robust back-end systems to support the projects we build.

What is an app?

App is short for ‘application’ and it refers to a type of software that can be installed and run on a device such as a smartphone, tablet, computer or smartwatch. The most common apps are mobile apps and all apps have a specific purpose, which could be anything from a fitness tracker to a game to an AR experience.

Why use apps?

From sales tools to fan engagement, apps are a powerful way to engage an audience – creating a window into a brand or organisation through an icon on their mobile phone. They give users instant access to content on or offline and, because they’re not restricted by memory, they can offer a high-end quality experience. Plus, apps can send push notifications – serving as a useful engagement tool.

What are the benefits?

Wide reach

Nearly four billion people worldwide use smartphones. That means nearly four billion people can download your app – and, to be honest, audience reach doesn’t get much wider than that. And with the Covid-19 pandemic having fundamentally changed how we interact with businesses, from restaurants to shops to schools, downloading apps is becoming more second nature than ever.

High quality experiences

As a rule, apps provide the highest quality experiences. This is especially true for AR experiences, where app technology is more advanced than web – offering greater and more reliable functionality. Smartphones also have less memory restrictions than a web browser, enabling high-quality visuals for an overall better looking experience. For apps with a lot of detailed content, we always recommend using an app – such as the heritage experience we created for East Suffolk Council.

Easily accessible

As soon as an app is downloaded, it can be used anytime – whether you have an internet connection or not. This means apps are more accessible and allows them to be used time and time again without using up data or struggling to connect, giving them a more reliable and higher-fidelity experience.

How do we do it?

We develop apps for iOS and Android platforms, often encompassing VRAR360º experiences as well as games, for a range of different clients and use-cases. To make sure the app is as effective as possible, we also offer detailed analytics – helping our clients understand how the app is used and highlighting ways in which they can connect further with their audience.
